The truth about cow's milk
Cow's milk is a nutritious, delicious food and is present in many people's meals. Those are the sentences we often hear, what we often see on advertisements. But do you know the terrible truth behind those glasses of milk?
To get milk, cows are forced to become pregnant and give birth through artificial insemination. Within 24 hours of birth, the calf will be painfully separated from its mother, causing terrible pain for both. The mother cow has to endure this up to 4-5 times throughout her life, until she is considered "out of useful value" and is sold for meat at a cheap price.
The fate of the calves is also extremely bad. Male calves may be killed immediately because they are unable to produce milk, or raised for meat. Female calves will have to repeat their mother's life cycle, being milked continuously for the rest of their lives.
Because of this completely unnatural milking practice, more than a third of dairy cows in the UK suffer from udder infections. When the infection is severe, dairy cows will be killed for "destruction". According to AHBD, udder infection is the main cause of premature culling of sick dairy cows. The dairy cows that were kept could not escape the abusive situation: they were locked in cramped, dirty and cramped barns for at least half a year.
That's why dairy cows have a lifespan less than a quarter of their natural lifespan, only about 7-8 years old, while regular dairy cows can live more than 25 years in a free environment.
Almost all farms operate for profit, so they do not care about meeting the needs of livestock. Even on farms with good care standards, mothers and calves are still abused, segregated and disrespected. And as a result, they die much earlier than their actual lifespan.
There is no reason for us to continue to encourage the exhaustion and pain of dairy cows, a gentle, friendly and intelligent animal. In particular, you can completely replace cow's milk with extremely delicious and nutritious plant-based foods. Go vegan today!
